Birmingham WFC Over 70’s 6 Stourport Swifts 2
On Tuesday 18th August, B’ham’s Over 70 WFA Midlands League team
welcomed new boys on the block, Stourport Swifts, to Brick Kiln Lane to play
a pre season friendly. Stourport are looking to join an over 70 league but at
present they are just playing friendlies.
The match was split into three 20 minute sessions with a short water break in
between.
The visitors were glad to be able to test themselves against a B’ham side that
were runners up in the WA Midlands League and winners of the WFA
Midlands League Cup this year. Stourport passed the ball well but lacked a
goal scorer able to convert more than the one opportunity they managed to
take when assisted by some slack defending by their opponents.
B’ham on the other hand, did not suffer from this problem as some neat team
work resulted in Clive Macey plundering three super goals to give them an
unassailable lead by the end of the first 20 minutes of play.
However, B’ham did not have it all their own way, and Keith Phipps ( surely in
line for an England Over 75 Cap soon) kept yet another clean sheet in the
second session and Clive and John Limbourne put B’ham 2 – 0 up to
effectively close the match out.
In the 3rd session of play B’ham started well and Brian Follows put them 1 – 0
up with an excellent finish after some good approach play by the B’ham
midfield players.
With about 5 mins left on the clock, Stourport claimed the equaliser that their
pertormance throughout the afternoon deserved.
The match was played in the best spirit of walking football and members of
both teams enjoyed a drink in the bar at the end. Stourport also extended an
invitation to B’ham to visit them for a rematch sometime during the coming
season.
Special thanks go to Brendan for refereeing at very short notice.
