70's v KICK OUT CANCER

OVER 70’S TAKE ON STRONG KICKING CANCER SIDE IN WARM UP FOR WFLA NATIONAL CUP

On Friday 22nd March our Over 70’s squad played four 20-minute matches against a strong Kicking Cancer side led by England Over 65’s player, John Cooper.

The side is made up of players who have been diagnosed and treated for various forms of Cancer and are either, still receiving treatment in whatever form, or are now in remission after a successful outcome.

The first match was an even affair with neither side being able to break the deadlock, and the match finished 0 – 0.

In the second game however, Kicking Cancer took the lead when the England Parkinson’s team Captain (who had also received treatment for Cancer !!)  scored with a long range shot that somehow found it’s way into the back of the Birmingham net.

Up until then it had been a very even game once again, but the setback only served to spur the Blues on to greater things. They equalised soon after and then went on to score two more goals to win the match by 3 goals to 1 with some great attacking play backed up by good defending to snuff out any further threats on their goal.

Two further matches were played out in the same style, with Birmingham emerging victorious in both games by 4 – 0 and 4 – 1, respectively. Considering the fact that the Kicking Cancer team had players of international team status and an age grouping of between 55 and 67, Birmingham Over 70’s showed just how good a team they can be when everything clicks into place,

Here’s hoping they can take this sort of form forward into the various cup competitions coming up in the weeks and months ahead.

Goal Scorers on the day were:

Decka Thorp 4, Roger Sutton 4, Frank Hughes, 1    Malcolm Thorp, 1   Derek Greene, 1
