|Match report: WFA National Cup 2nd Round. Stamford Strollers Over 70’s 0 Birmingham Over 70’s 2|
|Good match between two sides who played the game in the true spirit of Walking Football.|
Birmingham, after a long journey to Stamford, started the match brightly and took the lead after 4 minutes play when some good midfield interplay set up a chance for Dave Floy on the Birmingham right to finish with aplomb. Birmingham thought they had gone further ahead a few minutes later when Derek Thorp finished off another slick move only to find that Referee Brian Webster had quite rightly ruled out the goal for running. Stamford, to their credit, did not let any of this get them down, and after they had hit the bar with a super strike from distance, they continued to threaten the Birmingham goal and only a super save from Keith Phipps in the Birmingham goal prevented them from equalising. The second half saw Birmingham extend their lead when some slack marking allowed Roger Sutton to pounce on a loose ball, set himself and finish powerfully past Trevor Oliver in the Stamford goal. From then on Birmingham never really looked in danger of conceding a goal although Stamford did have a good chance to get one back but their player shot over the bar when well placed.
Player/Manager John L said, “ It was a very good team performance by the lads capped off with two excellent goals. The practice matches at Brick Kiln Lane have certainly helped the team gel, so thanks to everyone who took part in those games. It is much appreciated by me and the lads “
After the Stamford game, all the players enjoyed hot drinks, sandwiches and snacks kindly laid on by our opponents in a convivial and friendly atmosphere.
