On Tuesday we hosted a team from Oxford to play in our first competitive CONTROLLED FOOTBALL game. As some of you may know we have provided Controlled Football sessions for sometime now and it is becoming more popular with the older age groups. The temptation to run for some playing walking football can be frustrating, so the option to play a controlled game may suit.
Controlled Football is a new way to play the game. You can walk, jog, run or SPRINT – there’s no speed limit and no penalty for moving quickly. What’s controlled is the physical side: no deliberate contact, no sliding tackles, no high balls and no heading.
It looks and feels like football because it is football. Passing, movement, positioning and teamwork decide games, not size or strength. You still close players down, make runs into space and compete for every ball – you just do it on your feet and without leaning on anyone.
It’s built on the proven safety rules of walking football, with one big change: you’re free to run.

A few words from Manager Gary on Tuesdays exhibition game –
“Walking football has been and still is a fantastic opportunity for older people to play sport. It’s had a massive impact on both physical and mental health. However, there are many older players who are able to run and want this freedom in a game. Today’s “controlled” football match between Birmingham and Oxfords over 65’s was a thoroughly enjoyable game played in a great spirit with some excellent football from both sides. Birmingham won 4-1 and were the better side, although their goalkeeper made some excellent saves. Birmingham’s goals were scored by Tony Pounds, Alan Hodson, Nick Wilkie and Alan Hemmings. A special mention for the referee who had an excellent game.”
